Typing and TXT import happen in your browser. Automatic rewriting and assessment are not connected. Your situation and practice line are not sent to an AI writing service.
Listening and recording
Example playback uses your browser’s English voice service. Depending on your browser and chosen voice, speech synthesis may use an operating-system or browser-provider service. Local voices are preferred when available. Remove confidential information before playing your own text.
Microphone recording starts only when you press Record and grant browser permission. Audio stays in memory unless you explicitly choose to keep it on this device. Saved audio is stored in IndexedDB. You can separately opt into uploading a recording to your private account; no audio is uploaded for speech scoring. Otherwise, leaving the practice clears the recording.
Records on this device
Choosing “Finish and save on this device” stores the situation, sentence, optional typed attempt, chosen focus, date and completed steps in browser storage. Your own work situations require an additional save confirmation. These records are shared by people using the same browser profile. They are not automatically synced; account saving is a separate explicit choice. You can finish without saving. Clear this site’s browser storage to remove device records.
Optional AI and cloud voice
With your explicit consent, authenticated requests can send the scenario and sentence to OpenAI for a wording suggestion, or the sentence to Azure Speech for playback. Requests use server-side credentials, daily limits and no response storage at OpenAI. Provider processing policies still apply. Audio recordings are never sent to these generation endpoints. Services without configured credentials remain unavailable with an honest fallback.
Account records
Voice practice text and optional recordings use separate owner-only tables and a private audio bucket. Signed playback links expire after 60 seconds. Existing written exercises can be saved to your account only after you choose cloud saving and confirm that the material is safe to store. The situation, response, hint use, practice type and learning language go to dedicated Supabase tables protected by owner-only permissions. My records lets you read or delete those records. Signing in does not automatically upload your device history or recordings.
Own Words and YouTube Sensei share account sign-in. Practice records are kept in separate application tables. Use the existing account service for registration or password recovery. Sign out on shared computers.
Progress and examples
Your default progress uses real completed practices on this device. Optional sample analytics contain fictional records, always labelled as examples. Self-review and completion are not automatic language scores or evidence of mastery.
Language and hosting
The app suggests a language from the browser and hosting country hint. Own Words does not retain raw IP addresses for this suggestion. Your language selection is saved on the device and can be synced with your signed-in account. Hosting services process the request information needed to serve the site. No advertising trackers are included.
Workplace confidentiality
Follow your employer’s rules. Remove company names, personal information and confidential details before using work material. There is no automatic anonymisation or PDF/image extraction.
